STORY / GAMEPLAY In the year 2090, Earth out of nowhere becomes the target of a deranged alien species. Following the invasion and after the destruction of an alien spaceship, a new cutting-edge weapon called "Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter" is created increasing humanity's odds for survival. You are the "lucky" pilot to fly the Raiden through waves of enemies, in 8 different stages! There are two types of weapons available and you can collect several power-ups to make them more efficient. There are bombs and missile power-ups as well as collectable medals that'll add to your high score. Raiden is one of the greatest games in shoot 'em up genre's history and it's not just its excellent graphics and sounds, but the engaging gameplay that keeps you wanting for more in any platform you play it. Raiden needs skills, it's capable of throwing some hair-raising moments and your projectile dodging skills are pushed to their limits. Thankfully, despite its high level of difficulty, it doesn't get too frustrating.
GRAPHICS / SOUND The Atari Lynx conversion is technically great, considering the machine's limits! It features great colors, smooth scrolling and lots of simultaneous enemy sprites on screen! Raiden takes the Lynx's GPU capabilities to a greater level, hands down! As far as the sound, the game has a catchy intro tune and amazing (for its power) sound effects. Overall, Raiden on the Lynx is a truly successful shoot 'em up that reminds us of great playing times in similar games, on the far more powerful coin-op machines!
